I've done both and honestly, the class was the best thing for me. Sometimes community centers will have spanish classes that you can take so you don't have to enroll at a university or college.
I have been using Rosetta Stone. It is actually a really good way to get started. It constantly rewards you when you get something right! makes you want to keep going instead of constantly wanting to quit. I can get you a copy if you would like to try it out.
